As political and social protests grip the Middle East, are growing in Europe and a riot exploded in north London this weekend, here’s a sad truth, expressed by a Londoner when asked by a television reporter: Is rioting the correct way to express your discontent? “Yes,” said the young man. “You wouldn’t be talking to me now if we didn’t riot, would you?”
The TV reporter from Britain’s ITV had no response. So the young man pressed his advantage. “Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you.”
Straight up kung fu move… Pow.. Pow..! take that media person/s.
It’s getting louder and louder and more desperate
“The portrayal of women in the popular media over the last several decades has become increasingly sexualized, even “pornified.”
That’s the conclusion of a study from the University of Buffalo after surveying a few decades worth of Rolling Stones covers. If only images like this still sold magazines.

Christina Gonzalez speaks to RT America about Occupy Wall Street.
1. Thou shalt not see a sexist, misogynistic ad, say “that sucks” and leave it at that.
2. Thou shalt view all media through a critical lens.
3. Thou shalt watch every movie while wondering if it will pass the Bechdel Test.
4. Thou shalt critique media when it portrays women as one-dimensional, second-class citizens.
5. Thou shalt vote with thy wallet (also known as the “I will not pay $12 to see ‘I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell’ commandment.”)
8. Thou shalt utilize social media to get the message out.
9. Thou shalt not feel bad for still being influenced by the barrage of unattainable images.
I’ll add an 11th: Thou shalt recognize intersectionality in every component of media representation, sniffing out and calling them out on colorism, homophobia, heterosexism, classism, racism, ageism, ableism etc.
amen to #11
The ads, as you can see, depict quotes by friends or family members of prostitutes (“I’m proud of my tramp, raising two kids on her own”) which are intended to humanize sex workers; the bottom of each ad reads “Sex workers are brothers/daughters/mothers too.” They’re also intended to…
Got in the mail earlier today:
For years, Pat Buchanan has passed off white supremacist ideology as legitimate mainstream political commentary. And MSNBC continues to pay him and give him a platform on national TV to do it.
Buchanan has just published a book which says that increasing racial diversity is a threat to this country and will mean the “End of White America.”1 This weekend, to promote his book, he went on a white supremacist radio show whose host has said things like “MLK’s dream is our nightmare,” and “interracial sex is white genocide.”2
Buchanan has the right to express his views, but he’s not entitled to a platform that lets him broadcast bigotry and hate to millions. If MSNBC wants to be seen as a trusted, mainstream source of news and commentary, it needs to fire Buchanan now.
Please join us in calling on MSNBC to fire Pat Buchanan:
Here are a few examples of what Buchanan has said in the past:
The original Avengers promo image and Kevin Bolk’s wonderful, pointed parody.
Reader submission: I really like your blog! I believe that male opinion on body image really influences what the overall social construct of beauty is & as woman, I believe we should not subject to this!
Things white activists say to Activists of Color
umm how much do I love that someone made this and decided to send it in to me? A LOT
We are People of Color. We didn’t choose to be, but we love our cultures. Because of our skin, we have added struggles. In our safe spaces, we have every right to feel welcomed and not tokenized, harassed or ignored. We ask for you to listen to us when we speak about racism because we are being effected by it daily. This video is a compilation of things actually said to POC involved in activism and social justice.
We want to be heard, listen to us.
“I don’t have an privilege, I’m a woman.”
“You’re really angry. Why don’t you calm down?”
All. The. Fucking. Time.
A letter 17 year old Zooey Deschanel wrote to the editors of Vogue. Vogue ended up publishing the letter.
The Trans Youth Sexual Health booklet was produced by trans people aged 16-24 at Gendered Intelligence, in partnership with Terrence Higgins Trust. The project allowed young trans people to get together as a group and learn about sexual health, and also to discuss how to make sexual health information more relevant to trans people. As a result, a group of young people produced this information booklet, which is aimed at trans youth and their partners.

- Anonymous said:If I were dating you I'd take you to the highest mountain we could get too. The air would be cold and thin; we'd be dizzy and tired and it'd be hard to breathe. You would probably ask me why I'd taken you so far for a simple date and I would say that I just wanted to show you how you make me feel, dizzy and out of breath; and just as the sun crept slowly over the horizon and splashed over the small mountains and snowy valleys I'd add: "plus you're beautiful and make me want to live."
I wish I could have recorded my reaction to this but it can pretty much be summed up in “AHHHHHHHHHH” and then giggling.
Wow, I am lame.
